We used to get bored.

Now we just scroll. Endlessly.

Swipe. Swipe. Laugh. Swipe. Like. Swipe. Compare. Comment. Swipe. Forget.

Social media has rewired our minds to crave stimulation in shorter and shorter bursts. It’s not that we don’t want to focus it’s that our brain has been trained not to.

When’s the last time you watched a full movie without touching your phone?

Or read a long article without scanning for bullet points first?

Even writing this, I’m tempted to break my paragraphs into one-liners…

Just so your brain doesn’t click away 😫

EVEN SCIENCE BACKS IT UP

  • → The average human attention span has dropped from 12 seconds in 2000 to around 8 seconds today... shorter than a goldfish.

  • → Platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels condition our brains for “novelty addiction,” rewarding us for chasing 'new stuff' constantly.

  • → Dopamine spikes from scrolling mimic the neurological patterns of (surprisingly...) slot machines.

But here’s the scariest part:

Over time, we start avoiding deep focus because it feels boring. Reading a book feels like a chore. Finishing a task without switching tabs? Hell f*cking never. Even in conversations or spaces, we’re like... half-there.

We want stimulation, not boredom.

We want the rush of “what’s next?” more than the satisfaction of “what’s here.”

Take a look at the retention on videos for example. Nobody wants to 'pause':

We’ve outsourced too much of our curiosity to the feed, let algorithms decide what deserves our time and forgotten how to stay with a thought long enough for it to change us.

But, I think we can rewire that too.

  • With stillness.

  • Boredom.

  • Resistance.

The parts of our brain that crave depth are still there. They’re just waiting for us to come back.

Ask yourself:

→ When was the last time you felt immersed in something for an hour?
→ How many tabs are open right now in your browser and your brain?
→ What could you be capable of… if you trained your mind to stay?

☑ How to Reclaim Your Focus

You don't have to become a monk but here’s what can help:

Rebuild boredom tolerance: Sit in silence. Let your brain detox from input overload.

Single-task sprints: Set 20–30 min blocks where you do ONE thing. Don't split your focus. This strategy has actually been working really well for me.

Audit your inputs: Track your attention like it’s money. Ask: “Did this give me the proper ROI for the time it took?”

Create before you consume: Morning scroll kills flow. Force yourself to do some productive things before you doomscroll for the am.

The modern world won’t hand you back your focus. You have to take it back yourself. And the real danger isn’t that you’re distracted for an hour… It’s that you forget how to pay attention to anything that actually matters or could be useful to you.

Break the loop.

I’ve been writing songs

I write content and newsletters for a living. Sometimes the raw, unfiltered feelings turn poetic and then I turn them into lyrics and then to songs using Suno AI.
